The Alexander L. Kielland rig/platform was fabricated and completed in March 1976; it collapsed on 27 March 1980, whilst in service, due to a fatigue crack propagating from a welded joint, with the loss of 123 lives. Alexander L Kielland was one of eleven semi-submersibles of the Pentagon design that were built from 1969 through 1977. The platform design was developed in France during the late 1960s by the Institute Francis du Petrol and Forex Neptune S.A. Alexander L Kielland was one of seven rigs built by CFEM (Companies Franchise Enterprises Metalliques); it was the ninth Pentagon rig. The Alexander L Kielland was a semi-submersible mobile rig of the Pentagone type, a design which had been developed in France. The rig was built between 1973 and 1976 in France for an American operator. Although it was designed as a drilling rig, it was only ever operated as an accommodation platform during its four years in service. The Alexander L. Kielland was a Pentagon-type semi-submersible and, in 1980, was located in the Ekofisk Field for Phillips Petroleum.
